A Good as it Gets!!!

So it's pretty much as nice as it gets at the beach right now. Sunny, eighty five degrees, and there is a clean knee high groundswell with some thigh high sets. So sick. I spent my morning riding the 10'0 and doing my best to get as much nose time as possible! I can't even tell you how much I love my 10'0 Stewart Regal on days like today. Talk about GLIDE!!!! The water is super clear and feeling nice. Definitely 3/2 weather! We got really nice 3/2 wetsuits from Oneill and Rip Curl starting at about $150. You'll be warm and your suit will be flexible and both of those things are key to an epic session.

The tenth annual Billabong Pro at J-BAY is starting soon and this year Billabong and Cleaner Climate have partnered to make the J-Bay pro as green as possible! Reducing their carbon footprint and getting some supper tubes is what it's all about. Check the J-Bay website HERE for tons of info, cool videos, and photos as they get ready to kick the event off!

The UPS man rolled through a few inutes ago and dropped off a ton of fresh gear from VOLCOM, DVS, Matix, and NIXON!!!! Tons of tees, hoodies, long sleeve tees, shoes, denim and hats. Our selection of cannot be beat! Just look at these photos for the proof!!!!

Oily Waves....

Bullwinkle right in the pocket...

What's the haps crew??? How was your weekend? I spent mine driving a desk 8 hours a day. Not to fun but the ends justify the means, or at least that's what I keep telling myself... But from what I heard the weather was alright and there were little shin to knee high peelers all weekend. I heard it was so good that even the local wildlife got in on the action. I made it back to the coast for an evening session. Threw on some boardies, grabbed the log, and straight to the beach to get a few. I had a blast and that little session was all I needed to forget about that desk I was behind all day. All it took was one wave and I was amping!!!

Before the Jimmy went down!

I was up in York and when I'm there I always hit up Ruby's for some good eats so after the session Ruby's was the place to be. The have a hamburger on their menu called "The Jimmy" and I have been staring at it for quite some time. It is two 8oz patties, bacon, onions, mushrooms, cheese, lettuce, and tomato sandwiched between two buns. It used to be called the Mt. Aggie burger and that should give you some idea of how big it is. So last night was the night, I pulled the trigger and downed the Jimmy! It was so good and the perfect post surf session meal. If you're up in York check out Ruby's and if you're looking for a challenge order up "The Jimmy".

The Phelper talking with one of the realest dudes ever!

One tube I wouldn't go for...

It really, really saddens me to keep bring this up, but we have too. We can forget about what is happening in the Gulf. Day 70 and the oil and toxins continue to pour into our ocean. The only real hope we have at this moment is that the secondary relief wells redirect the flow some time soon, and by soon we got our fingers crossed for August. This little post I found on SurferMag.com gives some first hand feelings and observation from surfers in the Gulf. It is disheartening and disappointing that this accident happened and continues to happen everyday over and over again. This from a 52 year old surfer in Louisiana "Fourchon Beach is where I surf...or should I say used to surf,” says Coffman. “It might not be the greatest, but we do get some really awesome days. Sometimes you might be by yourself or maybe with four or five of your best bros. Now it all seems lost. Our beach is covered with oil, and with so much of it out there it’s far from being over. Our fishing industry is screwed. Something needs to be done and real soon. In the meantime, what am I supposed to do? Maybe I’ll move to California or at least visit some friends who live there. " For 5 things you can do to help and to stay current on the developments in the Gulf check HERE and check often.

We're starting to sell off our surfboard rental fleet. First up on the chopping block are the fishes. 6'0 to 6'4 NSP fishes going for $225 to $250. Boards come with wax, leash, and fins. They won't last long and we'll be releasing more renal boards towards the end of the week. Stay cool and stay stoked. Pioneers is here for YOU!!! We're hoping there could be waves tomorrow but we're not planning on it. My advice is to call the report line in the AM or check the cam. If there are waves we'll be in the water and if there are no waves, we'll still be in the water.

SURFING!!!!

The surf family O'Hara... I think this is James owning the set wave!!!

Wow, today is shaping up to be quite a nice one. 80 degrees, abundant sunshine, light off shore winds, and little longboard sets. Life is good. I got the new Reef surf video Cancer to Capricorn on the flatscreen, the stereo is turned up, and there is a nice little breeze making it's way through the shop. As I'm making my morning internet round, checking my favorite pages, blogs, and cams I came across the above sight. Four people in the water loving life and enjoying the little peelers. I'll give you one guess who those four people are.... That's right, Steve, Heather, and the boys! Pioneers through and through!!!

Like father, like son, Gavin setting up for the inside barrel section!!! Dad taught him well!

The Reef Video I got rocking is so good! Crazy surfing and a fun sound track. The good people at Reef are willing to share too! Watch or download the video for free right HERE. Get stoked for epic barrels and some lovely ladies!!!

Check out the FLIP Skateboard site for some serious skate action. The Rune Glifberg trailer is mind boggling!!! That dude is so gnarly. Everything on that sight is worth watching!!!

And if you wanna watch and epic futbol game get to ESPN3.com and be wowed by the Brazil vs Portugal game. This is almost a final in itself!!! My sister and her boyfriend just made the big move to Brazil. We talked the other day and she was trying to explain to me how crazy it gets there when a Brazil game comes on. Everything shuts down and soccer is the only thing that happens. When a goal is scored people yell, dance, and chug beers for the next 5 minutes. If they win the everyone just parties for the rest of the day and no one goes back to work. I am willing to bet it's going off right now!!!

Both of these shades just showed up from Oakley. The new Holbrook is slaying it and this black with 24k gold lense and this clear with silver iridium are no different. Oakley is so hot right now and this style is on fire!!!!!

There was a chance for surf early this upcoming weak... but that chance is gone and I'm calling it knee high from now to eternity. Annie forget about your gun and go get your log!

See you at the BEACH!!!!!

A Surfboard Construction Education!!!!

Traditional Polyurethane versus Epoxy Construction...

We've had a bunch of folks walk into the shop lately harboring a little bit of confusion about surfboard construction. If you've been surfing for a while you may already have an opinion on which is the best. However, if you're new to the surf lifestyle, you still may have some question on which type of board is best for you. With that being said I am going to do my best to explain some of the different kinds of boards that we have available for you here in the shop. The two biggest categories of board construction are epoxy and polyurethane or simply PU. And to break it down further we have hand shaped/glassed boards versus molded boards.

PU or polyurethane foam are pretty simple when compared to epoxy construction. When you think of this type of surfboard you think of Clark Foam. A traditional fiberglass board is hand shaped or CNC machine shaped out of a polyurethane foam core. The foam core is laid up with weighted fiberglass cloth and laminated with polyester resin. The board is cured and then sanded to a desired smoothness and voila! you have a traditional “fiberglass” surfboard or PU. These types of surfboards are most notable for their performance and specific flex properties and have been around since the 1960s.

Now Epoxy boards on the other hand can be made from two different core types. Those types are expanded polystyrene or extruded polystyrene. Expanded polystyrene or EPS is very similar to the foam used to make those cheap, white coolers that you get at the grocery store. If you are buying an entry level epoxy board you can basically count on it to be expanded polystyrene in the core. These epoxy boards hold up well when paired with epoxy resin. Just make sure that if you crack your expanded polystyrene epoxy board, which is hard to do, that you repair it before taking it back into the water as the foam will absorb water.

Extruded polystyrene is a closed cell core and since it is “closed” it repels water and is more resistant to compression and damage. One of the most notable differences from the Expanded Styrene Cores is the flex patterns are greatly enhanced due to its closed cell structure which will allow for greater response under pressure and are comparable to traditional PU flex patterns. All your higher end epoxy boards utilize this type of construction. An example of this type of board is the Lost XTRs that both Steve and I swear by.

Now a good hand shaped epoxy board, like an XTR, is made very similarly to a traditional PU board. The only differences being the type of core used and the type of resin used. They are very common amongst big brand name shapers and are widely available and customizable due to the fact they are all finished by hand. Now a molded board is created based on the dimensions of a traditional fiberglass plug. The hollow mold is then injected with the polystyrene foam to mold it into shape based on the master, and then covered with several layers of fiberglass cloth, epoxy resin, and typically a layer of high density foam to reinforce the structure and placed in a vacuum or press to compress all the materials together, hence the term sandwich construction. Typically a heating element can be built into the mold to allow the epoxy resin to cure at a higher temp increasing the strength. The techniques employed during these steps can be varied by different companies to get the desired strength, flex, weight, etc..

To break it down and try and make it as simple as possible I'll list each board's strengths and then an example to check out.

Traditional/PU- The way it's been done forever, lots of natural flex, good feel in the water.

Example- Traditional Stewart PU- Polyurethane foam glassed with polyester resin is still the most popular form of surfboard construction. This method is most common in shortboards, where weight is not an issue. Polyurethane foam is also great for traditional style longboards. The weight of the foam and a heavier glass job help with the momentum and glide. The familiar and comfortable feel of polyurethane boards keeps many surfers loyal to this longstanding method of surfboard construction. If you are looking for a handmade, custom board with a traditional feel and excellent performance characteristics, the classic poly surfboard is a viable choice.

Hand shaped epoxy made with closed cell foam- similar feel to a traditional PU board with extra durability, extra float.

Example- Lost XTR- XTR foam is a closed cell foam extruded at high speeds using expensive machinery. The main advantages are strength and imperviousness to suck water . It is very resistant to impact and compression. One of the most significant and most misunderstood qualities of the close cell construction is that almost no water absorption occurs in open dings (less than 1%). This means that a surfboard with a ding will not gain weight or change color resulting in longer memory (resilience) of the materials. Believe it or not you can actually surf an unglassed XTR blank!!! Also, the flex patterns of extruded foam when glassed properly can result in enormous advantage for a positive responsive surfboard. It generates more speed that any other construction. Epoxy Pro has developed it's own custom epoxy resin formulation called XTR-16. This resin is ideal for extreme surfing conditions. It has perfectly balanced optimal characteristics of clarity (lack of discoloration), light weight, strength, and flexibility.

Molded epoxy made with EPS- Very light, easy to maneuver, amazing durability, extra float, great for beginners, kids, and recreational surfers.

Example- NSP-This construction is used exclusively in the NSP program. It focuses on making the surfboard a durable as possible. The EPS core is reinforced with Fiberglass and then a top sheet of Top Sheet is added to enhance the overall strength of the board. All the layers are fused together using a special epoxy resin that helps to create what we think is the most durable performance orientated Surfboard construction available on the market globally right now.

If you already knew this then I'm sorry for wasting your time and if it helped you figure some things out, then I'm stoked I took the time to spell it all out. Little tiny waves today and for the weekend. Don't forget the Dew Tour is happening tomorrow and Saturday. Tickets are still available so go support skateboarding! We got 3 riders in the contest so best of luck to Dave, Nolan, and Nora. Go get em team.

Enjoy the day!!!

GGGGGGOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL!

You know this dude is screaming it!!!!!!!

Stoked for two reasons! One, the US just defeated Algeria in a nail biter and advanced to the second round of the world cup. Two, the internet surf nerds are calling for surf next week!!! I'm not sure which one I am more excited about. I guess the win because it's a sure thing, we all know how accurate those long range swell forecasts can be. So stay stoked for the USA and keep your fingers crossed for some summer swell.

We got a box from O'neill today and it was full of over 100 rashguards for men, women, boys, girls, and toddlers. Long sleeve, short sleeve, bright and loud, simple and solid. You name it we got it! All are UV rated and will keep the strong summer sun from turning you into a lobster! We've got it all!!!! Everything you need to have the best time at the ocean is HERE.

I love a good rant every now and then. Sometimes they're true, sometimes they're written by kooks. This one is legit, I can't say I agree with everything but it made me laugh and it reconnected me to a similar quote my dad used to through out when things went south... Kordory TV, which is highly entertaining, is planning on keeping the rants coming. I hope they do because this guy as a point! Check it HERE.

Someone recommended that I check this clip out. It's of Shane Dorian talking about a two wave hold down he had at Mavericks. Pretty crazy... check it HERE.

Newburyport Skate Fest!!!

The Newburyport Skate Fest is one of the best local skateboard events of the year. It's held annually at the skate park in Newburyport, MA which is located right behind the RAN Middle School. This event always draws some of the best skaters from the area and we can guarantee you'll get to watch a handful of the Pioneers skate team destroy the place! This is a great family event and all are welcomed. There is plenty of stuff to do and watch even if you don't skate but still support the sport. Local shops will be there donating their time, local food vendors will be slinging burgers and pizzas, and there is always a great raffle with tons of awesome prizes. Who knows, you might even win something just for showing up. The festivities kick off at 5pm and usually run until dark! Don't miss this fun day and don't forget to bring the family, your stoke, or your wallet. All proceeds from the skatefest go right back into keeping the park one of the best in New England!

The UPS man just rolled by and dropped off a bunch of Reef sandals for us. New styles and colors for men, women, boys, and yes finally for girls too!!! For the little tiny boys and girls these sandals come with an elastic strap to help keep their flops on their feet! It's Officially The First Day of SUMMER!!!

Sunrise was at 5:05 am this morning and sunset is at 8:26pm tonight. That's 15 hours and 21 minutes of sunlight today, making it the longest day of the year. I had plans to get up, go for a paddle, and watch the sun rise but I forgot all about that when the alarm went of at 4:45 this morning. Maybe next year... But it is super nice out! If you're at the beach today you are STOKED and if you're like me your looking forward to getting down there later today. There are no real waves to speak of but sometimes just a nice long paddle is all you need to keep the stoke alive.

If that's not going to do it for you, today is Go Skateboarding Day, you could always grab you board and go on a skate mission. Like I have said before the new mini ramp at the hampton skatepark is finished and it awesome!!! I spent about an hour down there this morning skating by myself enjoying the coolness of the morning air. Steve is planning on cruising over to the park once it cools down later on this afternoon and skating around a little and dropping off some nice cold gatorades for everyone.

Last years tank! Frankie, where are you?

Last year we did an limited reversible Pioneers mesh tank. They sold out almost instantly and this year People have been knocking down the walls to get there hands on one. Well i just placed the order and well have a couple dozen coming sometime next week! Last year we did a black and white combo. This year we mixed it up and did a black and grey combo. The proof I saw looks really good, I can't wait to get these back into the shop!

Your presence is requested in the VAN

The VAN just rolled through the shop and dropped off some of the best tees that I have seen in years!!!! We are the exclusive dealer on these which means you're not going to find them anywhere else in NH! Limited quantities so if you want one act fast! GET IN THE VAN!!! Do your part and help put a little gas in the rig!

SUMMER!!!!

WOW, what a nice day. Everybody is at the beach! Tiny little waves, nice seabreeze, ah the seacoast you gotta love it! Our day started off early today when about 25 members of the Pioneers crew showed up at the wall and picked up trash for an hour. I wish we could have paddled out but the tide was just a little to high... But we did some good and everyone who pitched in was rewarded with Vans hats and water bottles! Thanks Vans and thanks to everyone who made it out!

If you missed the cleanup today it's ok because you get a second chance tomorrow with the Surfrider crew! In honor of International Surfing Day the crew will be meeting at Jenness Beach at 1 pm for a surf session and a cleanup. Park where ever you can find a spot and make your way over to the Surfrider tent, say hello and find out what you can do!

SURFING!!! SOCCER!!!

YO CREW!!!! We are set up for quite a nice weekend! Unfortunately there isn't alot in the forecast as far as waves go. But then again they said it was going to be flat today and you know who surfed? The Pioneers crew, that's who! It was tiny and I mostly just watched Steve surf but at least I was in the water, stayin loose, stayin stoked! 2 feet @ 8 seconds is surfable!!! Beautiful temps, sunny skies, and tiny waves means instant fun at the beach starting NOW! Knee high at suckers, go get some!!!

So did you see it? Did you see the US soccer team choke and go down 2 goals before the half. I was ready to turn it off and write the boys off but man am I glad I stayed glued in. The US rallied back and scored 2 to tie it up! Great soccer, horrible reffing. We scored a third goal but it was called off due to a foul that never happened. We should have won but we'll take the draw. We certainly have to win the next one if we want to advance to the second round. Next game is Wednesday stay tuned in. Check out FIFA for the highlight video!

We received a few more lost boards yesterday. 3 more Planks 5'7, 6'0, 6'2 and a 6'0 Blunt. If you've been thinking about picking a Plank up now is the time! Lost has pretty much told us there won't be any available for about 3 months. So it's now or September! Your choice. Our buddy Michael sent us another email last week talking about his Plank. Turns out he is a little tired of hearing about my Motivator (which I surfed this morning). Read it for yourself:

Hey Bryan,

You have to stop boasting about the Motivator, I had the ol' Plank out at Nantucket last week for three days, all waist +, and a really fun session this morning up at Fox Hill, and the Plank rules! Seriously, I am very impressed, it has more rocker up front than I expected and fits in these waves real nicely. Definitely a wave-catching machine, I feel like I am hardly getting a workout paddling in, and it turns nicely too.

Michael

You heard it here, everyone else who has ridden one agrees, Get yourself on a plank and you'll never long board again!

So lets talk board short technology! Volcom, Rip Curl, and O'neill make the sickest shorts on the market! We just got our finally order of trunks in and our collection is just plain CRAZY! We got the super high end four way strech shorts all the way to you simple and functional trusted trunks. I have a handful of Volcom 4 way stretch shorts that I live in all summer. The joke is it's like surfing naked and it's true. When you get used to wearing the best trunks nothing else will cut it. Super light, super stretchy, minimal seems, no rashes! That's where it's at. Our selection is crazy, come check them all out but first start here.

Volcom Annialators! These are what I'm running and loving them! Super comfy, super light!
Check the specs HERE!

The O'Neill Hyperfreak! You have to try these babies on to believe in them. Check them out HERE!
The Mirage Boardies from Rip Curl. Lots of colors and sizes to choose from. Check the tech specs HERE.

Pioneers Beach Sweep tomorrow!!! 7 am, The Wall at 10th street. Vans has given us awesome metal reusable water bottles to hand out to all participants along with hats and stickers. Please come down and help keep our beaches clean! I look forward to seeing everyone there bright and early! Bring your logs!!!

SEE YOU THERE!!! EVERYBODY AT THE BEACH!!!!!!!!!!!!

BP COFFEE SPILL

Well the waves were tiny but Steve still surfed. I feel like a slug because I didn't but man those waves were TINY... I think Steve is as stoked on surfing as anyone could be. Not alot in the future as far as waves go but at least the sun is out and it's nice and warm. It is even a nice day for a paddle. As I was strolling with the pup I was trying to imagine what life here would be like if we had an oil spill in the gulf of Maine. My conclusion is that life would suck... No surfing, no fishing, no walks on the beach. We're lucky not to have oil rigs out there blocking our view of the horizon or destroying our ocean.

I walked into the shop and found these two videos, have a look, Gulf Oil Spill Update with Surfrider's Matt McLain. The situation gets worse everyday... Get more info from NotTheAnswer.com WARNING... If you care about the ocean this video is going to seriously bum you out...

As serious as this situation is, this video will make you laugh even though you shouldn't because it's so true.

We got a big shipment in today from Sector 9 and Carver Surf Racks. Both a surf rack for your dad's bicycle or a Sector nine longboard would be a stellar gift for dad. The rack that we got will comfortably hold up to a 10' longboard and will pay for itself over the summer once you add up all the parking tickets you won't be getting. I've been riding my bike to the beach lately and loving it! No matter how bad your session was you end up smiling on the bike ride home! And we are fully stocked with TONS of bamboo and drop thru boards from Sector 9. So SICK!

Don't forget the SKATE CONTEST we got running this week in honor of International Go Skateboarding Day!!!!!

I have two pairs of tickets to next fridays Dew Tour in BOSTON!!! Contest is...
1. Film a few tricks on the new mini at hampton park and post the video on our facebook page. Best video get two tickets. 1 for filmer, 1 for skater.
2. Post a photo of yourself skating the new mini at the hampton park here on our facebook page. Best photo get two tickets. 1 for the lens man, 1 for the skater.

Don't Forget about Father's Day!!!

JUICE MAGAZINE IS HERE!!!!

Yo Crew! What's up? Surf was fun this weekend right? I got me some good ones! The big picture for the upcoming week doesn't look all to epic but we might get some logging sessions in a few days this week. I surfed with our good buddy Francois yesterday morning and we had a TABARNAK session. I let him rip the 10'0 Stewart Regal, and like everyone who surfs it he was beyond stoked and surprised by it's nose riding capabilities. Steve surfed this morning and said he groveled hard! Definitely a little wave out there this morning so if you got the time and energy mother ocean has got some little gems on offer for you!!!

So there is a lot of stuff happening this weekend. Internation Surf Day and Skate Day are on there way. We also have a Pioneers Beach Sweep going down Saturday morning at 7 am at the wall, and on top of that Sunday is Father's Day. Check out was surfrider NH has planned for Sunday HERE. We had originally made plans for a global surf demo this Friday night but as of now the demo has been called off and will be rescheduled for a later date.

Time for Dad to shred!!!

So with Father's Day right around the corner it's time for me to remind me all of you lovely readers just how awesome our selection of DAD gear is!!! I really don't know where to begin but if he doesn't surf then let's start there. Get your old man a surfboard! I think Nat Young claimed surfing is the fountain of youth that Ponce De Leon was searching for all those years. Your never to old to start and with awesome beginner boards at a reasonable price now is the time! We have an awesome selection of clothing with classic tees and shorts from brands like O'Neill and Rip Curl. Our watch and sunglass selection cannot be beat. We have fashionable yet functional tide watches for dad from both Nixon and Rip Curl and insane shades from Oakley, Electric, and Von Zipper. If dad is a skater well how about a new set of pads or the latest issue of JUICE magazine!!! That's right it's HERE. Maybe dad is just a chiller at heart and all he really needs is a set of Volcom Bocce Ball or a Volcom Horse Shoes Set. We got tons of stuff to satisfy the man so stop by and we'll help you get that perfect gift that will stoke him out and make you look like a hero!

LOTS OF AWESOME WATCHES LIKE THIS ONE!!!

Mega Quarter Conquered

The I Path team rolled through town last week and put on a serious show at Rye Airfield. Ben Raybourn was killing it, skated everything padless and was blasting huge airs in the vert. Jaws dropped in on the mega quarter. Check the link HERE from the I Path Blazed and Confused East Coast Tour!
Padless and Hesh!!!!
Habitat Skateboards is getting set to release their newest full length video titled Origin. This will be there third video and if the past two, Mosaic and Inhabitants, are any indication of things to come Origins will be sick. No special effects, no gimmicks, just skating the way it should be! Click on the video below to watch the trailer.

GET SOME!!!
