Lib Tech Waterboards / Surfboards Coming Soon @ Pioneers in New Hampshire

So stoked to get our first glimpse of the Lib Tech Waterboard and that glimpse is coming soon!!! I found this amazing interview that I wanted to share with you. In it Mike Olsen the mad scientist behind all thing Lib-Tech talks about the creation of Lib Tech so many years ago and how the waterboard came about.

All the technology deep inside the waterboard...

Shapes and dimensions soon to be available...

Olson shows off the concave top which not only makes the board more responsive, but also doesn't hit your sternum while you're paddling.

“Every material in these has never been used in a surf or snowboard before, except for the [fin] screws,” says Olson of the boards. Olson began shaping surf boards in the early 80s and actually funded the launch of Lib Tech snowboards with his efforts. “It has been a dream forever to bring surf back in the mix,” he says.

The line includes three different series with 14 distinct shapes, all of which include grab rails, honeycomb construction, rubberized elastomer sidewalls, and concave tops. They also feature a non-absorptive foam, so even if you get a ding you don’t have to get out of the water. That said, following two years of protos being ridden around the world, dropped on rock beaches, and other pummeling conditions, riders have only been able to get two dings. Lib’s calling the boards “2D to D” or Dang Difficult to Ding.

As with all its other products, Olson and his crew have focused on the environmental impacts of the boards, as well as their toxicity for the shapers, and the lay-up process uses no brushes or sand paper. The honeycomb weave you can see on the boards is the result of a process called Isotropic Fusion, a one-step reaction that bonds all of the board’s materials incredibly fast. ”You can make a board at six in the morning and surf it by noon,” adds Olson. The honey comb construction also adds strength to the boards, whose flex Olson describes simply as “awesome.”

Lib is also building its own fins, but the fin boxes are FCS compatible. “FCS fins are available anywhere in the world,” explains Olson about the design.

So far only Olson and Jeff Henderson have seen the entire design process, but the duo is working on training others at the company’s headquarters in Washington, where all of the boards and fins will be made. The plan is to ramp up to full production in the next month for deliveries to hit retail, where they’ll sell for $696.96, in late spring.

The anticipation is killing me... WATERBOARDS!!!!

Board art that will be available!

Brian Nevins and the Ten Thousand Dollar Slide Show

At this point there is no need to introduce Brian Nevins. You've seen his photos on the blog, on the web, in the mags, and in your dreams. Recently while Brian was laid up with a broken ankle he took the opportunity to explore his multi media side and used it to win the Pro Photographer Showdown at the Telus Ski & Snowboard Fesitval in Whistler, British Columbia.  On stage and a couple drinks deep Brian accepted his first ever GIANT check making him the hometown hero for all the local north east surfers!

In it's entirety the winning slide show can be viewed right here. Turn the lights down low, the music up, and full screen it!

BEN ROSS... Welcome to the FAMILY

If you've been in the shop lately you might have recognized a new face either helping you out of lurking in the background. If neither Steve nor I have introduced you yet then now is the time.  I'd like to introduce to you the newest member of the Pioneers Family, Ben Ross.  Ben has put hit time in both on a snowboard and a skateboard and it shows. If Steve and I have our way he'll be ripping on a surfboard soon too.  Ben was a big part of the Rye Airfield army and we are super STOKED to have Ben with us at the shop.  Next time you swing in make sure to say hi and introduce yourself to Ben, he's the man.

Ben just got back form a snowboard contest at Boreal in California.  Click HERE to see some more photos and read about the happenings of Ben's trip.

Matt Biolis of Lost Surfboards interview w/ Stab Mag

KOLOHE AND MAYHEM IN NUMBERS

A breakfast with Matt ‘Mayhem’ Biolos in which the unusually specific nature of Kolohe Andino’s boards are discussed; Stab’s theory that Mayhem succeeds because his surfboards are designed for average surfers first and then filter upwards rather than vice-versa; and the discovery that Kolohe’s pops Dino and his speed runs at Uppers were responsible for creating the outline of surfboards ridden by every monster airing kid…

It is a gloomier than usual Sydney summer morn when I scoop up California’s Matt Biolos at the Sydney factory of his shaper pal and occasional biz associate Mr James ‘Chilli” Cheal. In an industrial zone a few clicks from the beach, we see Biolos a fittish man of middle age, unshaven but not derelict, Jewish but not orthodox, grinding out boards for punters who’ve paid $80 over retail to taste his meats.

Can y’believe it? Taj Burrow and Kolohe’s personal craftsman ruining his lungs for surfers who may or may not’ve ever loosed a fin in their lives? Considering not one of those 100 sleds has my name on it, I don’t know whether to be stunned or jealous. “Every name on the order form is someone you wouldn’t know,” he says thirty mins later when we’re socking javas at the Armchair Collective in Mona Vale. “But, that’s what we’re here for! That’s what pays the bills!”

It’s a pet theme of Mr Biolos’, the importance of looking after the lil man first and believing rewards will follow. “That’s what makes surfboards so special. It’s the only piece of equipment made the way we do it.” I lay out my theory that his success is strongly related to his ability to make stable platforms for average surfers and that once pro’s get a taste of it, they want it. Therefore, his designs filter upwards whereas most shapers get their feedback from a professional and let it filter downwards, often to no one’s benefit.

“The Sub Scorcher was an average guy’s board that Kolohe rode and then it trickled up and now you’ve got Drivers and all those higher-volumed boards being ridden by the hot shots. I’m shaping high-volume boards for Julian Wilson and thinking, whoa, how did that happen?” Mick Fanning is another surfer who believes in the high-volume mantra. He was riding boards of around 24 cubic litres, often to radical success, but last year he was kinda feeling that there was more to life than a six-o by 18 3/8”. After riding a Kolohe board at Trestles he upped his cubic litres to 26 (Taj is a 23.5, if you’re wondering). “Put that volume into one of Darren Handley’s already amazing boards and they’re unbelievable,” says Matt.

We talk for a while about how Taj, when he was on the brink of leaving his board sponsor Firewire, made Matt promise he’d be there for him, surfboard-wise; about judges scoring flow more than ever before (Taj beats Adriano!); and in a scenic tour away from surfboard design talk about how Matt initially viewed the presidency of Barack Obama with suspicion (high taxes!) but now he digs on the guy. But, what stuck most in the conversation is the obsessive care taken in the building of Kolohe’s boards.

“(Kolohe’s pops) Dino’s a better version of Dr Frankenstein. He’s the ultimate grinder. He’s fanatical. I’ll be in a meeting and he’ll pace back and forth outside the door just waiting for it to end and then he’ll storm troop in and throw nine boards on the floor. Dino pushes and pushes. We get 30 blanks and we weigh ‘em all and write the weight on the order form. Then we weigh ‘em after they’ve been cut and then after they’ve been glassed. Dino personally drives ‘em to the glasser and paces back and forth at the glass shop making sure the laps aren’t too short, making sure the laps aren’t too long, weighing ‘em after they’re glassed, checking the fin angles and if the fin angles aren’t right he cuts ‘em off and puts ‘em back on again. He came to Australia, called up (shaper) Lee Stacey and said, ‘Fuck it, these waves are so sucky. I want more angles on the fins.’ So they fucking cut the fins off five boards and fucking put them back on. It’s… intense.”

Dino is more than just the meticulous father of a prodigy, howevs. Back when he was owning the US domestic circuit, Dino’s speed runs at Trestles helped create the forward outline that now, accidentally, has become the ideal shape for every hi-fi kid.

“Dino and I developed that forward outline nearly 20 years ago. Dino wasn’t using it for finners but it transitioned over nicely. Dino was always surfing Trestles, surfing Uppers, and he needed that forward outline to get down the line to do those floaters and now Kolohe uses those templates and those rockers to build a strong foundation. They force you to put it on a rail. They force you to draw out your turns. And, almost by default, they give you a much better platform for nose picks and landing backwards.”
Back at the factory, Matt stomps back into the shaping bay, the whip of Mr Cheal grazing his ample cheek. A dozen more boards to hack; a dozen more dreams to realise.

Stewart Surfboards at Pioneers in NH

Stewart 9'2 California Noserider

Performance and noserider, two words that typically don’t go together in the same sentence. The California Nose Rider is the exception, a fine blend of what makes each style work. The nose section is full and stable and proportionally pulls into a performance tail with a 2 plus 1 fin set up. Tucked edges ad subtle concave compliment the board’s design.

Stewart 9'6 Regal

Stewart 9'8 Regal

Stewart 10'0 Regal

Our ultimate noserider. 90% classic, 10% hot rodded. The T-banded stringer Regal provides a smooth traditional feel with softer rails and extra tail rocker. The last 20" of tail drop to a tucked edge to offer more bite on hard turn. The Regal may look and respond in classic form, but will come around more like a modern longboard when you need it to.  I own this board and swear by it!!!

Stewart 9'0 Redline

The ultimate 9'0 surfboard! Turns like an 8’6” Paddles like a 9’6” Noserides like a 10’0” Bill says this is the best longboard he's ever built.

Stewart Funline available in 7'0 7'6 8'0

The newest board in the Stewart line the Funline the Funline paddles like a 9'0 and surfs like a 7'0"?
Its designed for the person that doesn't want to ride a big board but wants flotation and wants to
maneuver the board like a performance board. The Funline is built on the"Hydro Hull" bottom develop by Bill Stewart to give a rider speed and control while making it forgiving. Excellent choice for someone looking to step down off a longboard or for those that just don't want to ride a longboard.

New Hats, Tees, and Stickers Too.  More info @ Stewart Surfboards, Stop by or hit us up for more info!

Been out of the shop since Saturday and I've got a lot of catching up to do on the blog. I got the chance to head out west to Whistler Blackcomb with a good friend and enjoy another week of winter. Conditions weren't all time but we got a good park days in, two semi powder days, and an EPIC day of heli boarding in the back country of British Columbia.  Such an amazing experience and so grateful for the opportunity.

So that's what I was up to and today's blog is going to be a full highlight from the past week.

"TransWorld SKATEboarding is proud to present our 24th video, The Cinematographer Project. We’ve assembled 13 of skateboarding’s finest filmmakers to each produce their own original three-to-five minute short. The result is a truly creative and diverse take on the current world of skateboarding." The video is in at the shop and it is absolutely AWESOME.

New shipment of Vans shoes.  TNT 5, TNT 5 Mid, Type II, and Era Pros. All so good! Here are the TNT 5s in low and mid in the full assortment of colors.

The ladies of the ASP are back at it again for the fourth stop of the ASP Dream Tour. The ladies are midway through the Beachley Classic and the girls, as usual, are ripping!!! Big story yesterday was Courtney Conlogue taking down the reigning world champ Carissa Moore. After she steam rolled the competition last year I was expecting big things again but Carissa has been having a rough go lately and has evened claimed she's out of the running for 2012. THE UPCOMING COMMONWEALTH BANK BEACHLEY CLASSIC QUARTERFINAL MATCH-UPS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

QF 1: Tyler Wright (AUS) vs. Laura Enever (AUS)
QF 2: Malia Manuel (HAW) vs. Stephanie Gilmore (AUS)
QF 3: Coco Ho (HAW) vs. Rebecca Woods (AUS)
QF 4: Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) vs. Courtney Conlogue (USA)

Waves have been fun the past few days, or so I've heard, and looking to be fun through the weekend and into next week.  Stocked with O'neill and Ripcurl suits and a fresh shipment of Lost boards. Everything you need to get in the water we got!

30 Years of Transworld Skateboarding

While making the 30 Year Anniversary Issue, Transworld Skateboarding interviewed the 30 most influential skaters of all time on film as well. Over the course of 2012 they’ll be posting these interviews along with classic footage that tells the whole story.  When I watch these videos it's like sitting down and getting a history lesson from the guys who made history. It makes me so proud to be a skateboarder and to know who I have to thank for something I love so much.

Every interview that has been released so far can be found right HERE on Transworld. I check back often and so should you.  To give you a glimps at what's here this is the lastest interview featuring one of skating's most interesting characters, Jason Jessee.
