The Sunday Story Behind the Photo with Steve

This photo was taken in April 2001 during my third sidecut phase. The board is a copy of a 150cm snowboard blown up. I rode this board mostly in the spring of 2001 and found that it had great drive from the rear but at the same time I could move up on the board and initiate turns from the nose just like a snowboard. Find a surfboard you can do that with.

I've got a whole pile of these things in my garage, some that work, some that don't but for one reason or another this board never ended up in the garage. Instead this board found it's way next to my wood pile and has been there for the past 10 years.

This summer there was a fun glassy waist high day at the Wall and Bryan kicked me out of the shop and told me to go surfing w/ my boys. So I flew home grabbed the boys and realized I had left my Lost Rocket at the shop. Remembering my sidecut surfboard I walked over behind the wood pile and basically pulled this board out of the ground. It had been covered in leaves for over 5 years and was completely brown. My boys looked at me in disbelief and I said ''I got me a vehicle." We cruised over to the wall, I threw in a pair of red FCS FG3's, put some wax on it, paddled out, and had a super fun session with my kids!

I have spent over 20 years ON and OFF riding surfboards w/ sidecut and with over 1,000 sessions on sidecut surfboards I don't think there's anyone that understands how surf and snow can overlap more than me. Like I said, I have a garage full of crazy looking snowboards, I mean surfboards. I'm sure some of you are saying "a snowboard needs flex to turn" but a surfboard doesn't because it's already perfectly flexed due to the rocker it already has.

I see sidecut becoming a part of surfing starting with big wave boards first. You always see guys getting to the bottom of a 30ft + wave and they have so much speed that they can't put the board on rail due to the outline, they go straight and the wave just catches up to them and eats them up. But w/ sidecut the only thing they will have to do is lean. By doing so, it will put more rail in the water, cut through any chop and carve a perfect turn while holding speed.

2012 Main Event Snowboard Series in New England

The Main Event, a competition deeply rooted in the East Coast community, returns in 2012. New for this year are two events, two formats, and two musical acts – matched with the most progression-fueled snowboarding that makes this one of the longest-running East Coast snowboard contests. Presented by Vitamin Water, with additional sponsors, SASS Global Travel, Burton Snowboards, Nixon, Nike Snowboarding, Arbor, Bern, Snow Grind, ReelTheory, and NXTZ, this promises to be the best year of The Main Event ever with unmatched support and prizes!

A proving ground for up and coming snowboarders since 2002, The Main Event has been furthering the opportunities for local riders with the winners earning spots into the US Open and trips to SGT in Argentina. Today’s top pro riders – Scotty Lago, Chas Guldemond, Brandon Reis and Yale Cousino honed their skills over the years at this time honored contest.

“On the East Coast The Main Event is one of the most prestigious contest series,” said 2010 Olympic Bronze Medalist, Scotty Lago. “Anyone who is anyone is there—simple as that!”

Just as the riders have grown, so has the contest itself. The Main Event has always been a staple in New England and this year the contest continues to push the limits of what riders on the East Coast can expect when it comes to competition. In 2012, The Main Event is partnering with Sugarbush, Vermont and Bretton Woods, New Hampshire for two unique and creative events that will satisfy every style of rider from the hip hop to the hippy with plenty of transition, rails, music, and more.

“The East Coast loves its sporting traditions,” said USA Olympic Team Snowboard Slopestyle Head Coach, Bill Enos. “And next to the US Open, The Main Event Series may be the most progressive and real snowboard contest in New England.”

The Main Event Series will kick off 2012 at Sugarbush on Saturday, February 4th with the Hip Hop Rail Jam. Far from a typical rail contest, The Main Event at Sugarbush will reward the best all-around riders who navigate the hip and rail combo-course with a US Open ticket and many other top prizes. The fun at Sugarbush does not stop there with Afroman taking center stage post contest to provide all competitors and spectators alike with his own brand of hip hop flavor.

Final stop of 2012 takes place the following week on Saturday, February 11th at Bretton Woods for Bretton Woodstock in good ole New Hampshire. Once again the contest will feature a unique hip course built just for this event courtesy of Snow Grind’s, Josh Lempert. Closing out the festivities that evening to celebrate another year of The Main Event will be a veritable festival of bands bringing the hippy lifestyle to New Hampshire for a day.

Now even though The Main Event is first and foremost a snowboard contest let's not forget it's one hell of a party too. Everyone is welcome and the party goes deep into the eve.... Be There!!

Matt "Mayhem" Biolis's Take on Surf Expo 2012

"There wasn't much focus on surf left at the old Surf Expo. It was more like SUP Expo, with over 80 booths of SUPs....I would dare say 10 times more than Surfboard booths (If you don't count cheap import boards that is). Kind of a joke actually. But it is what it is."

Here is a short list of real shapers and surfboard companies that support surfing on the East Coast!!!

Glass Jobs to Die For...

Mayhem Biolis just threw this blog up with some insane photos of some glass work by a couple of Frenchmen.... The boards look absolutely amazing, I grabbed two here that are my favorite but the are plenty more to stare at HERE on Mayhem's Blog. They are half way through making 40 stock boards. A mix of Bottom feeders, Planks, UberPlanks, RockUps and Larger size (6'6-7'0) SubDriver round tails. They have gotten a few custom orders on top of that as well.
They are there for a few more weeks, so if anyone wants some thing, contact the shop and we will help you make it happen!!!!

Proper resin work on this bottom feeder.

Check out the intricacies of the polished finish versus matt finish on this bottom feeder. There are a handful of others boards that they are playing with this, sanded finish deck with gloss rails and bottom. Rad Stuff!!!

The Sunday Story Behind the Photo with Steve

Vans and surfing!! If you know me at all. Then you know I have a van fetish. It doesn't matter what make, model, color, or year. I just like vans. I feel they have always been the ultimate surf vehicle. But if I could go out and buy any van it would be this one. All black 1976 Chevy short bed w/ aloha surf racks, sun roof, fog horn, Cragers, and fully customed on the inside (which I would end up trashing). This photo was taken in front of my parents house on Seabrook Beach summer of "79".

There's a lot more story to this picture, but I'll just let you image. What I can say about this photo is that it really represents surfing in the late 70's... and boy do I miss it.

How the Elite order Surfboards from ...LOST

Kolohe's Mentawai quiver from 2011

Let's face it, if you're on the ASP tour you are an elite athlete and you order your surfboards like a BOSS. Considering these guys probably clock more barrel time, hang time and rail time in a single session than most of us do all year, the boys need equipment quality and quantity to suit what they’re doing in the water. What follows is a copy of correspondence from master boardbuilder Matt Biolis to his team in preparation for 2012 ASP Dream Tour rookie Kolohe Andino’s start to 2012.

"The last post (which you can read HERE) was an example of how to order boards if your an “average” Joe , who’s serious about your surfing. I thought this might be a good time to show everyone how an 17 year old superstar, World Tour rookie, orders his boards….25 at a time!
Obviously this also really motivates me. After making boards for Kolohe since before he was born, and being intrinsically involved in the transformation over last three years from NSSA king pin to qualification on the WT at just 17, it seems like we just made the fist big goal happen a full year ahead of what we had hoped for. The thing is, it only took a week or two before its time to go back to work and get ready for the next step.

JERRY,
PLEASE WRITE UP THE FOLLOWING ORDERS FOR KA.

1. 8 Boards for surfing around Ca in Janurary (make asap)

– 3 x 5’11″ SubDriver 18.88″ 2.25″ UL Yellow (measure blanks) -2 glass on +1 Powerbase
– 1 x 5’11.5″ SubDriver “MF” 18.75 2.25″ UL Yellow Powerbase.
(touch more rocker and foil)
– 8 total

2. 8 Boards to be shipped to Australia by FEB-10 (Snapper boards) Dino will add 2 existing boards to the boxes that we ship to Oz, DONT PACK UNTIL DINO KNOWS EXACTLY WHATS GOING IN THE BOX.
– 2 x 5’11″ Sub Drivers (hold for details)
– 1 x 5’11.5″ SubDriver “MF” 18.75 2.25″
– 5 x 6’0″ 18.56 2.25″ Drivers

Another shot of Kolohe's Mentawai quiver from 2011

Matt's BLOG is awesome, you can actually communicate with the guy for real. Ask him all kinds of questions and he'll talk you through ordering your next board right through comments you leave back and forth. The first comment on this post of Matt's was from someone named Marcus and his question was similar to both Steve and my question.

"Too much pressure for a 17 year old "superstar" don't you think Matt ?
25 boards ? Is this necessary? (what Steve and I were thinking)
I'm wondering what he will do with the board's he doesn't like...
send it for me! hahahahaha"

Matt's response;

"Unfortunately 95% of highly skilled surfers still prefer the feel of a traditionally built board
(PU/PE) I am actually one of them ( not highly skilled, but prefer PU/PE nonetheless). Unfortunately these boards can break pretty easily.
We are making a lot of adjustments knowing WT events have long waiting periods and usually run in good waves..
As opposed to NSSA and WQS events which can run in sloppy junk most the time. We need to adjust boards for the new playing field.
1st round for testing here this month, second round for sending straight to Oz and the Brazil boards are to make sure that if Fernando Norinha is grinding board breaking tubes ( like it often is) and he breaks a bunch of boards ( which it often does) he doesn't end up with a good selection of boards for Oz ... Which , by the way is 3 contests ( 2WT AND 1Prime) back to back to back.
As far as pressure goes, I don't think it's anything compared to Shuan White, Dorothy Hamil, Mary Lou Retton or any one of Hundreds of teenage athletes who have performed in Olympics over the years. In fact , closer to home. It is not much different that the ride we have been fortunate to be a part of with Carissa Moore the last couple years.
Like the Who said " The Kids are All right"

The Sunday Story Behind the Photo with Steve

I was rummaging through a box in the garage today and came across this picture of a good friend from back in the day. Even though I haven't seen or talked to him in over 20yrs, I'm sure if I called him or showed up on his door step, he would SMILE, welcome me in, make me feel at home, and let me stay for as long as I needed to. That's just the way he was brought up. He and his family did that for me and other snowboarders many times in the early 80's and I will never forget it.

Who am I talking about? I'm am talking about Andy "The Dog" Coughlin. The Mayor of Manchester Center VT back in the day. Andy knew everyone and was the life of the party on and off the mountain. I know he'll be stoked to see this photo w/ the old school VT knit sweater, Burton snow pants, and Burton Cruiser 165. The photo was from a GS contest held at Loon in winter of 86... I'm sure he won.

Kids if you never heard of "The Dog" get your snowboard history books out and start reading...

Heir to the Throne... 2012 ASP Contenders

2011 has come and gone, delivering nothing short of one of the most exciting and talked about seasons the tour has ever witnessed. We saw bombing conditions at Teahupo’o and Pipeline, rippable surf in New York and San Francisco, and landmark swells at Bells and Supertubos. We saw the ascension of Kelly Slater (USA), 39, to the annals of sport history with an unprecedented 11th ASP World Title.

We saw the announcement of a new guard of challengers including Owen Wright (AUS), 21, Michel Bourez (PYF), 26, Josh Kerr (AUS), 27, Julian Wilson (AUS), 23, and Alejo Muniz (BRA), 21. We saw the continued adaptation and high-performance of perennial threats such as Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, Taj Burrow (AUS), 33, Adriano de Souza (BRA), 24, and Jordy Smith (ZAF), 23. We saw the preternatural performances of rotation kids Gabriel Medina (BRA), 18, Miguel Pupo (BRA), 20, and John John Florence (HAW), 19.

2012 is now upon us and 2012 is a question mark. Will we see the end of the Slater era? Will the world’s greatest surfer continue to outperform the next generation of talent? And if not, who will challenge for the throne? What follows is a breakdown of the 2011 ASP World Title Top 10…Watch the Throne…

KELLY SLATER (USA): 39 years old. 48 elite tour victories. 11 ASP World Titles. Robert Kelly Slater has been surfing’s “next best thing” for the past two decades. He is considered one the most dominant figures in all of sport…and he’s exhibited no sign of slowing down. Boasting incredible fitness and an ability to adapt to the ever-evolving performance level on the ASP World Tour, Slater is as dangerous as he has ever been in his career. However, the motivation to contest an entire season may be lacking as the iconic Floridian looks to transition to the next phase of his life. A guaranteed appearance at the season opener on the Gold Coast will see the great one don a singlet once again and his result at the Quiksilver Pro will likely set Slater’s pace for the season. Question is, when (IF) Kelly walks away, who will be next to ascend the throne?

JOEL PARKINSON (AUS): With 11 seasons amongst the world’s best under his belt, 30-year-old Joel Parkinson has finished Runner-Up four years (’02, ’04, ’09, ’11). The concept of being within grasp of the ASP World Title four times in one’s career is near unfathomable and would break most mortals. Fortunately for the surfing world, the man with arguably the greatest rail game in the world is not “most mortals”. Parkinson is hungry, fit and surfing at the height of his powers. If he can stay injury free in 2012, we may very well see what so many have waited to see for so long…a Parkinson atop the year-end ratings.

OWEN WRIGHT (AUS):In 2011, 21-year-old Owen Wright announced his intentions to the world when he made the Finals in back-to-back-to-back events against Slater, taking him out in New York and narrowly losing at Teahupo’o and Trestles. That said, Wright has well and truly proven himself capable of taking out events in any and all conditions. One of the most well-rounded surfers on the planet, the progressive goofy-footer will be licking his chops at the addition of Tavarua to this season’s schedule and the rest of the ASP Top 34 will have to collectively lift their games if they’re to keep up with the kid from Culburra in 2012.

TAJ BURROW (AUS): Burrow was once quoted as rhetorically pondering his affection with the ASP World Tour as “how do you get off this ride?”. And “ride” may very well sum up the 33-year-old’s 13-year tenure challenging for the title. Burrow is one of those rare individuals who has been considered an ASP World Title threat since his rookie year, but the ageless natural-footer from West Oz has only gotten as close as Runner-Up twice (’99, ’07). From the start of 2011, the remainder of the Top 34 fixed their gaze on Burrow as he was “surfing better than he ever has” (to quote virtually every surfer on tour). While Taj continued to amaze surf fans around the world last year, he didn’t reach the podium until the ASP Prime event at Haleiwa. These days, to win the title, consistency isn’t always enough. One needs podium finishes at the elite level to break the spirits of his/her fellow challengers. Taj is more than capable of this and we may just see it in 2012.

ADRIANO DE SOUZA (BRA): In a word: “passion”. De Souza has single-handedly changed the way the world views Brazilian surfing while clearing the path for the next generation of South American talent. Adept at airs, turns and barrels, the former ASP World Junior Champion is entering into his sixth consecutive year amongst the world’s elite (at only 24 years young too). De Souza has the drive and ability to be an ASP World Champion. The challenge for him over the coming years will be maintaining his dominance as the talent level continues to soar.

MICHEL BOUREZ (PYF): Ever since ‘The Spartan’ rampaged through the qualifying series in 2008, the world has been expecting big things from the powerful Tahitian. After finding his feet throughout his rookie and sophomore years, Michel Bourez was a picture of consistency in 2011, finishing Equal 9th in the first five events of the season. After a midyear slump, Bourez punctuated the remainder of the year with back-to-back Quarterfinal finishes in Europe and an Equal 3rd at Pipeline. Owner of one of the most powerful turns in the business, Michel is especially lethal at the reef passes (oh hello Tavarua!). Bourez has finished 21st, 11th and now 6th in his tenure amongst the world’s elite and if he can get off to a speedier start in 2012, we may see the Spartan challenge for the throne.

JORDY SMITH (ZAF): There are not too many surfers out there that can blow past the world’s best surfers at only 80%, but Durban’s Jordy Smith is one of these surfers. The big South African was once again in the title hunt throughout the first half of the season, but a mid-season injury in Tahiti derailed his campaign as he had to sit out at New York and Lowers (two events we would have liked to see him at). Throughout his four-year tenure amongst the ASP Top 34, Smith has shown the world many faces: progressive rookie, disinterested party boy and now a legitimate ASP World Title contender. His fitness level has never been higher and his talent is undeniable. We’ll have to wait and see what face Jordy turns up with in 2012.

JOSH KERR (AUS): From fly boy to…well…fly boy. Australian Josh Kerr has long been considered one of the best aerialists in the world, but his tube sense and big wave bravado have long been overshadowed by his above-the-lip prowess. Until now of course. Kerrzy proved himself at the 2011 heavy water spots and his rail game has improved significantly since he first took a shot at the ASP World Title back in 2007. Now well inside the ASP Top 10, Kerr will have to deal with the expectation of his fans and the judges while figuring out where he goes from here. Is the headline “Josh Kerr Claims 2012 ASP World Title” outside the scope of reality? We’ll have to wait and see.

JULIAN WILSON (AUS): Some people are given a lot in this world. Some people have to work for everything they get. The Sunshine Coast’s Julian Wilson is someone who can fall into both categories. Oozing with natural ability, it was Wilson’s work ethic and determination that saw the young natural-footer rebound after a slow start to the season to bag an ASP Prime win in Portugal and then post a Quarterfinal finish at Jeffreys Bay before blitzing the back half of the season. His efforts garnered him the ASP Rookie of the Year title and his charging at the season-ending Billabong Pipe Masters has been burned into the memories of the world’s best surfers. Wilson makes no apologies about his motivation at the top of the sport: he’s here for the ASP World Title. 2012 may be the year we see something special.

ALEJO MUNIZ (BRA): The second rookie to crack the Top 10 on the ASP World Title rankings and the man no one saw coming. Of course, anyone who had spent some water time with Muniz prior to the 2011 season would attest to the fact that the young Brazilian is the complete package. Solid fundamentals with the ability flare his fins at will, the thing that sets Alejo apart from other newcomers is his ability to put up big results in a variety of conditions. Muniz made the Quarterfinals at Snapper Rocks, Jeffreys Bay and Hossegor and the Semifinals at New York and San Francisco. The one thing that plagued Alejo’s rookie season was inconsistency: for every Quarters and Semis finish, he would suffer a Round 2 or 3 loss. The kid’s smart and well aware of this and we expect a marked improvement in 2012, but he is a challenger for the throne?

This list obviously fails to mention the remainder of the ASP Top 34, but they should not be discounted. As Slater said, “At this level, any of these guys can win any heat,” and when that’s the case, the 2012 ASP World Title is truly up for grabs. With the deactivation of the midyear rotation for 2012, the current ASP Top 34 will compete for the entirety of the season, starting with the season-opening Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast from February 25 – March 7, 2012. Watch the throne…

Snowboard Season Update

Well, it's January third and winter is sure taking it's sweet time showing up. Even though it looks like a cold October day outside the mountains of New England are producing massive amounts of grade A snow with the current temps. I've ridden twice now, once at Wildcat and once at Gunstock and I've got to say conditions are pretty damn fun!!! Both are open from top to bottom with a bunch of runs on offer and those are just the two mountains I've been too. All the big names like Loon, Killington, Stowe, Jay Peak and Sunday River are in even better shape. Stowe and Jay picked up 6 to 8 inches last night!!! Basically the moral of the story is while it may not look like winter, it is. Drive north with your board and see for yourself.

I also wanted to do a quick review on my Burton Super Hero and Cartel; ReFlex bindings. It's been a while since I've ridden a Burton board, I've spent the last 3 years ripping my beloved Skate Banana. Well first off the overall impression of this board is IT RIPS!!! I really don't have anything negative to say about it. The board has no rocker, no camber??? Sounds crazy but it works, it's called Flat-Top construction and it's working. Lots of hold under my feet thanks in part to the "frost bite" edge technology (similar to magna-traction) and a really loose, forgiving tip and tail. I have zero powder time on it yet but I expect big things out of this board. The Super hero also features "Raduction Technology" which basically allows you to ride a smaller board without sacrificing anything. My Super Hero is a 154 and I'm 185 lbs and it's got all the hold I need. Pair the board up with some Cartel bindings (which also rule) and you've got a smooth, responsive board that is truly ready for all conditions.

My advice: buy one, you won't be disappointed.

To keep this Snow Stoke flowing we've got TICKET DEALS to get you going!!! Right now, while we've got em, spend $150 on snow gear and get a free lift ticket to CRANMORE good Sunday through Friday (say you saw it here on the blog). We're still well stocked with all things shred so if you need a whole new set-up or just a new pair of goggles swing by and we'll make it happen.

The Molly Mustache Fundraiser

At the end of November I wrote a blog about Steve and I growing Mustaches to benefit the Molly Fund and if you stopped by the shop in December you couldn't have missed the staches we were sporting. Well Today is January 2nd and if you come in you'll notice Steve and I are both clean shaven and looking quite dapper. Steve's stache was MASSIVE and mine was reminiscent of Paris in the 20s... Now that the staches have been shaven and the donations have been tallied I can without a shred of doubt call the FUNdraiser a HUGE SUCCESS!!!!

When we first pitched the idea we were only looking to raise about $100 dollars each. As or December 31st we raised ONE THOUSAND, TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY DOLLARS FOR MOLLY!!! WOW!!! The support for the staches was RIDICULOUS, Steve and I are still in awe of the generosity of our community!!!! People dropped off cash, checks, sent us money in the mail, and donated to MollyRowlee.org in our honor! We can't thank you enough!

Here is the full list of all those who generously gave to the cause!!!!!
