Plenty of Waves....

But where are the off shore breezes??? The extended forecast looks like a bummer. Lots and lots of on shore winds. North winds, east winds, strong winds but no WEST winds... I drove up the coast today on my way to work and things were looking pretty ugly. Huge blast of water raging over the wall and up the stairwell carrying rocks and foam across Ocean Blvd. I did however see one brave soul out in the surf battling for a few. If you know this guy then you can probably guess who it was, but if you don't check out this BLOG from the archives for a little local knowledge... He's the man.

In Molly's memory, The Northern Vermont Series, Smugglers Notch Resort, The Smugglers Notch Ski and Snowboard Club, and the Molly Fund are pulling together the sickest, most inspiring Rail Jam to date. Take the time to read through the information on the Molly Fund site, mollyrowlee.com. What one family started as away to heal has inspired hundreds upon hundreds of people to join in helping those who fight childhood cancer every day. The Molly Fund is a non profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. ALL proceeds from The Molly Rowlee Rail Jam and its Silent Auction will go directly to the Fund.

The Event will be capped at 50 athletes and a small group of invited "celebrities", with four separate divisions GROMS (under 12), KAHUNAS (30 and over), and MENS and WOMENS (Everything In Between). There are two possible entry fees... $50 will get you a bib # and lift access, anyone wishing to pay the $100 entry fee will receive that and a special Molly Rowlee Rail Jam care package. The first 50 participants with their money in will get the spots. Checks made to The Molly Fund and mailed to Paige Manning/Molly Rail Jam 421 VT RT 15 Underhill VT 05489... If you are using a Credit Card, please go to mollyrowlee.com and follow directions to use the paypal system there that is SPECIFIC to the Rail Jam Event. Check in for athletes will begin at noon at the Smugglers Notch Ski and Snowboard Club on the bottom level. The Rail Jam will begin at the conclusion of the NVT Slopestyle event in The Smuggs Terrain Park located directly in front of the SNSC Clubhouse. There will be an ongoing BBQ and music free of charge, and the Silent Auction will run from noon on with some incredible items.

Are the two competing in Olympic pairs figure skating??? I know Buck is in full cowboy mode but would he take his love of the range to the ice??? And if that is Steve O he sure has some nice legs! Rain, Wind, Snow , Waves...

So the mountains are getting slammed with snow today, while on the coast we're getting rain...

The mountains are in desperate need of a dump and we are in need of some waves. I guess this is a pretty good situation, I just wish we were getting all that snow too. Lots of east winds the next few days but when this system finally pulls out we should have some good waves left over.

But until that happens I have some good rainy day entertainment for you. First up is Archy; Built for Speed. This is a great film about Matt Archibald, about his good choices, his bad choices, and where he is at now. Epic!!!

Next is the Jeason Jessee film Pray for Me... Jason skates as good as anyone but always has and always will live life his own way. Another great film about one of skateboarding's most unique individuals. I have both films in stock at the shop if you need to see more...

As I stare out the window and think of spring one of the things I look forward to most is riding my bike. I ride a fixed gear whenever possible and while trolling on the net I came across this video over at Tardzinger which got me stoked to do a fixie mission with some friends this summer. An End, A Beginning

This weekend at Stowe Mountain in VT, the Main Event Snowboarding Series come to a conclusion. The finals are the 27th & 28th and an overall Event Series winner will be crowned. After 7 years in operation the Main Event Series has become the premier snowboard series for the amateur and professional riders on the east coast. This event series is managed and coordinated by Hampton's own and former Pioneers employee Brandon Halberstadt. Brandon loves snowboarding as much as anyone I know and his dedication to the sport is easily seen through his commitment to pushing the progression of young east coast talent. The Main Event is sponsored by Red Bull, Flow, all things Burton, SASS, and NIXON. The overall winner gets an all expenses paid trip to South America with SASS and this weekends winner gets an invite to compete in the prestigious US Open of Snowboarding, which happens yearly at Stratton Mt. This series is a great stepping stone for anyone that dreams of one day making a career out of snowboarding.

As one series ends another begins... The ASP World Surf Tour first event kicks of this weekend in Queensland Australia. The Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks should be epic! It feels like just last week I was watching Mick and Parko battle it out at Pipe for the world title. Slater made quite a stir last year with his self designed boards and talks of creating the Rebel Tour. The ASP responded to Kelly by changing things up a little. They adjusted their judging criteria, the ranking system, and by adding more prize money into the tour. Slater has his eye on title number ten, Parko and Mick are ready to battle it out again, and the young, hungry, progressive surfers like Owen Wright, Dane Reynolds, and Jordy Smith are ready to take down the giants. This is going to be an exciting year for the tour and I am stoked it's already getting underway. Surfing is a sport that knows no season! Get stoked and don't worry, Pioneers will keep you up to date as things get moving!

While the surf is already starting to build it appears that the ocean is going to be a giant washing machine until Friday or Saturday or forever... Nothing works on an east around here and that looks like all we are getting until further notice. However, snow is in the forescast and we need that! Another Blog for the Ladies...

Good afternoon Pioneers Crew. So the ocean is still flat but not for long. We have a major system moving in tomorrow and then a second on later in the week. If you haven't looked at the weather in the past few days then get ready for a shocker... snow/rain/clouds next 9 days in a row. But with those gloomy conditions waves will come. The extended forecast shows some serious swell on tap. Steve is working on the forecast for the upcoming week so check the report page later today or tomorrow. In the mean time check the WEED forecast for a little eye candy.

So as the title of today's blog states this ones for the GIRLS!!! The March issue of Surfer Magazine has a great article entitled Woman's Rights which is about 5 beautiful surfer girls surfing equally as beautiful rights down in Mexico. The article has a great perspective on woman's surfing, where it came from and where it's going. It also talks about the role of these woman in surfing both as role models marketing tools. The professional women's surfers of today are different than those of the past and this article explains why. There is no doubt in my mind that these ladies rip and that the 2010 dream tour will be better than ever. I often think about the fact that most people I know would much prefer to watch women's tennis over men's tennis. I wonder if this will ever happen with surfing. I am going to go out on a limb here and say yes... We still have a few copies of the mag left so come grab one for yourself and until then check the video below. In the realm or skateboarding girls make up a very small percentage of the skateboarding population. The is changing but quite slowly. Here in NH we are fortunate enough to have a couple of really good female skaters and a skate park that is stoked to promote women's skating. Every Tuesday night at Rye Airfield is ladies night where the girls get to shred for free! The size of the groups seems to get bigger and bigger every month and I have noticed some young girls coming in and picking out their first complete skateboard package. Next Tuesday night there is going to be a girls only skateboard clinic. All ages and ability levels are welcome, it's 5 dollars, it's from 6 - 8 pm, and rumors are the lovely Nora will be on hand to give up some secrets.

On the ladies snowboard front the girls are killing it! The Olympic halfpipe event was so good. Tora Bright's run was awesome and if Gretchen had stomped her run I bet she would have been on the podium to. While you may not be ready for the Olympics yet you are ready for the All Girls Billabong Flaunt It slopestyle and rail jam series at Waterville Valley this Saturday the 27th of Feb. Cash money and tons of prizes!!! The following weekend at Loon is the Droppin' In women's snowboard clinic. This clinic will teach you to hit jumps and rails and to ride the halfpipe. The Great Atlantic

Ahh the Great Atlantic... Today she is calm and next week she will be vicious. Our little chunk of ocean is certainly an interesting one. Check out the Surfline feature of the week,it's called Off of the Beaten Path and it is focused on all the great surf spots in the Atlantic! We get a little shot in there from Maine. I am going to try and post a new trick tip every weekend from now on. Sometimes it will be skate, sometimes snow, but today's is surf related. The trick tip of the week is brought to us by World # 1, Mick Fanning. Here Mick is talking about how to generate speed on your shortboard or fish. Timing and rhythm are everything here and practice does help. Skateboarding on some transition or pumping on a longboard skateboard are great ways to improve you speed generating ability. Once you have this skill it gives you the abilily to beat section and generate the speed you need to hit the lip. Watch and learn and be on the look out for more trick tips!

Waves of Awesomness!!!

The Olympic wave of awesomness continues. Hanna Teter claims the Silver and Kelly Clark the Bronze. Four out of six Olympic halfpipe medals is pretty damn good! Dare I say we are a Dynasty???? So by looking at the cams today it is easy to see it'd flat, flat, flat. I was hoping for some little longboard waves this weekend but it's not looking to good. There is however a good looking storm forecasted for the middle of next week! Waves and snow sound good to me, bring it on!!!

The Lizard King, maybe you know him, maybe you don't. He is a skater, a ripper in fact, and he is making his name know lately. He does it all. Backside 180 one footers down Wallenberg, mega ramp, Battle commander at the Berrics, and he designs some pretty damn good clothing too. He rocks KREW clothing and we just got a fresh batch in. Really good denim, tees, hats, and button downs. Check the gear and videos below. If you wanna skate like the Lizard the fist step is to look like the Lizard! All Hail The Lizard King!!!

If you missed it, last week was the Mavericks Big Wave Contest and it went down in some XXL surf. Steve and I watched it live all day live on the webcast (the internet is so awesome) and if you want to you can watch the rebroadcast HERE. The waves easily had some 40 ft faces on the sets. There ended up being a ton of spectators on the beach to watch the event live and as the tide came up a "rouge wave (of awesomness)" came in and pretty much took them all out. Broken legs and ankles, mangled scaffolding, and lots of wet spectators was all that was left once the water dissapated. As always there were lots of cameras there to catch all the carnage and thanks to the internet I have it here for your viewing pleasure! Enjoy!

SCOTTY LAGO!!!

It is with great pride as a snowboarder, as a resident of NH, and as an American that I get to announce that Seabrook's own, Scotty Lago, is coming back to the Shire with a Bronze medal hanging from his neck! I am so stoked for Scotty, he did it! Scotty is a snowboarder's snowboarder, as Pat Bridges from Snowboarder put it "he chalked one up for the good guys''. Yeah carrot top got the Gold and we're pumped for him as Americans but Scotty is that kid from down the street. He just snowboards and has fun, he doesn't need coaches, or trainers, or private halfpipes. Scotty is really just a snowboarder and he deserves this more than anyone!

Tiny little waves on tap for today and for the weekend. I saw some beautiful knee high peelers at the wall this morning. There are some magical looking sandbars down there right now. I didn't surf but now that I am at the shop looking at the cams I wish I did.

Snow Stoked!

Early Morning Stroll...

Well they got it right for once. I can safely say that we got a good 6+ inches of snow at the beach last night! It feels so good to look out my window over the marsh and see nothing but white. The waves were super fun this morning. Waist high sets with a light offshore breeze made for quite a fun morning. I surfed at the wall with only one other guy out and we were far enough apart where I was truly surfing by myself. It so rad to look back towards the beach and see all the houses and trees sporting a fresh white look. I have been missing the snow and I am happy to have it back on the ground.

After my session and a big bowl of Frosted Flakes the pup, the little lady, and I set of on a nice stroll through the woods. The light was awesome and we had fresh tracks on all the trails. My dog was beyond stoked and was having so much fun charging through the snow. She is definitely a pure bread Husky because she is at her happiest charging through the snow! I can only hope that when that water warms up she will be as happy in the ocean as she is in the snow.

When I say back country snowboarding I am willing to bet that your mind is instantly brought to thoughts of Alaska and Colorado. Well Tuckerman Ravine is in the spotlight on Transworld Snowboarding.com. Tucks is legit backcountry! Snow into the summer, avalanches, ice chunks... if you do something stupid you just may die. Scotty Lago Has A Posse

Well they say there we're going to get some snow over the next 24 hours. Some forecasts call for 1-5 inches others call for 4-8 inches and some forecasts just say wintery mix with no significant accumulation. I would like to believe that we are going to see 8 inches of snow but I am having a had time doing that. The past few snow storms have been a serious let down and I just don't want my heart broken again. So I am just gonna bank on some rain and hope that there are some fun little longboard waves tomorrow morning. So my opinion is expect shin high sets and a dusting of snow and if we get more then you'll be stoked!

As the Olympics get rocking I have to remind everyone that Seabrook, NH's favorite son is riding for the gold tomorrow! Scotty Lago is going for it and quite a crew has developed in town to give Scotty all the support he needs. That crew is Scotty Lago Has A Posse!!! and we are centralized on Facebook. We are about 1,500 members strong, we have tee shirts, and the leaders of the posse are throwing one hell of a bash tomorrow afternoon to celebrate Scotty and his shot at Olympic GOLD! The party starts at 3pm at the Common Island Cafe in Seabrook. There will be prizes, giveaways, and a bunch of bubs getting rowdy. All are welcome and the more people to show the better! Qualifiers start at 4 pm, semis at 8:15, and finals at 10:15. I got a good feeling about this and I know Scotty is gonna be on that podium in the end.

Friday Perfection Courtesy of Get In The Van

Who's got a case of the Mondays??? I do, but luckily the leftover chinese food I am going to have for lunch is motivating me to stay alive. I don't know about you but when I get to start my week off with a surf everything just seems to go a little smoother. Looking at the deep blue this morning I knew there was no chance of surf and a high probability of the Mondays kicking in somewhere around 9 o'clock... I nailed it! But then again yesterday was a great day. The ocean was as blue as I have seen it in a while. It was a great day to spend with your Valentine. I have nothing to complain about, I think I just want to go surfing. And because I always wanna go surfing maybe it's not the Mondays I am feeling, maybe it's just my surf stoke slipping away. However, there is hope, waves for Tuesday and Wednesday. They are probably going to be small, but small is better than flat and small can keep the stoke alive, flat can't.

If you checked Ralph's Pic today then you know that this past week was 52 weeks since Ralph started keeping track of our weekly wave situation. Turns out 50 out of the past 52 weeks have had waist high or better surf. That's pretty damn good for NH or as I was calling it this summer Calihampshire! Check Ralph's page HERE for week 52 highlights and soak in the memories of another fun swell come and gone. What I want to know now is do we start over with the count? Is today week 1 of 1? or Is today the first day of week 53? Where in the world will Captain Ralph take us next? Stay tuned it and hold on because I am sure we're going to find out!

My favorite thing about this article is local boy Dan Murphy talking about traveling with his dog Indy. Dan and Indy are great, they make the perfect couple and the last line of the list that talks about Indy getting more coverage than most skaters is the honest truth.

Red Bull is at it again, this time their focus is on surfing. Red Bull Project Air is aimed at giving surfers the ability to push themselves to do bigger, crazier airs. They are keeping a daily blog as project air progresses. Check it out HERE at RedBullSurfing.com. They have even built a custom skateboard ramp to simulate launching of the lip. Skateboarding is really hard and with the exception of Jordy Smith the team looks like a bunch of little kids doing fly outs. Either way it looks like a blast and I would love to skate the ramp and launch into the foam.

What is up crew? We have a beautiful Saturday morning on our hands. Fun little knee to thigh longboard waves at the beach. It's sunny, it's kinda warm, it's a good day to be alive! Surf the past few days has been really good! I know there will be some good pictures and videos coming real soon so keep checking and I will post them as soon as they're up! I also have to retract a statement I made last week. I claimed that the ocean had been flat for a week and a half. After a conference with Ralph I take it back because there were waist high waves last Thursday while I was snowboarding. The Run Continues! Photo proof at Ralph's Pic and I am sure there will be some great photos of the past few days up there tomorrow too!

The Mavericks Contest is LIVE as you read this. The video link below is a live feed to the webcast. Lots of fog at the moment so it is kinda hard to see but the waves are huge! Spectators are getting taken out!!! This is a great way to waste some time on a lazy Saturday.

Free Lift Tickets

Good morning! Fun surf out front right now! I had a good session this morning, it's been a while since we have had waves and all the boys were frothing to get a few good ones. The swell is starting to get a little more easterly in direction and as that happens the surf should come up a little. The wind is lighter and more westerly than expected so the waves are pretty clean and fun. The tide was high at 9:30, so it's backing out and the surf should get pretty fun as the water level drops. Do what you can to get a few this afternoon and if you can't make it today there should be some fun leftovers tomorrow...

So as stated above we got our hands on some free lift tickets and we want to share them with you. So to get your hands on one of these babies all you have to do is spend $100 or more and we'll hook it up. I have tickets to Pat's Peak, Cranmore, and Loon. Ticket numbers are limited and the deal goes while supplies last. I am thinking about heading north this weekend so come get some gear, grab a ticket, and maybe we can figure out a carpool situation for this weekend.

Any Outer Banks fan worth there weight in salt knows all about this house. I've been watching this dream house slowly inch its way into the Atlantic since my first visit to the windy sand spit over a decade ago. My parents brought us down to North Carolina in a motor home when I was fourteen, my brother ten, it made a lasting impression on both of us. We've both been back many times I've been twelve to be exact. Its become a ritual of sorts, something that just must be done at least once a year. The draw comes from seeing nature unmolested for the most part dueling with herself on open stretches of sand being brutalized by the relentless ocean waves and the fact that you can surf alone down there which in its self is priceless. I've spent a fair amount of time next to this house sitting watching waves. I've surfed out in front of it many times using it as reference point for how far and fast the current was pulling me. I've made mental note to myself on every visit of the houses progress into the waves and
I REALLY WANTED TO SEE THIS DAMN THING FALL IN! I CAN"T BELIEVE THEY MOVED IT....

Stoked!

I know that it is a little early to start talking about 4/3 wetsuits but we just got our spring shipment in from RipCurl so maybe a light flexible 4/3 session isn't as far away as it seems. The RipCurl Insulator is the best suit that RipCurl has come up with in a while. Both Steve and myself are wearing 4/3 Insulators and we are beyond stoked with everything about them. The are super super easy to get on and off, they are really warm, and they have awesome flexibility exactly where you need it.

So here is the run down on what makes this suit great. First of it comes with a detachable hood that gives the suit tons of versatility. No more hooded vest, the built in hood is great when it's cold and zips off completely when the water temps warms up. This suit is warmer then most 4/3s because they carry the 4mm rubber all the way down through the legs. The only 3mm rubber is in the arms where you need the flexibility more than you need the warmth. The suit is also fully liquid sealed everywhere, which increases it warmth, except in the arms. In the arms the suit is blind stitched and glued which gives the arms even more flexibility. To put it into perspective it keeps you toasty warm like a 4 mm suit should, but paddles like you are only wearing a 3/2. Finally the suit is a chest zip which is great for warmth and comfort and with RipCurls new pleated design there has never been an easier chest zip to get in and out of. This suit is great, Steve and I both back it. If you need a new 4/3, look no further, the Insulator is it!!!

We got them yesterday, fresh for 2010, The McTavish Original. This model was the first model to really bring modern Longboarding into the 21st Century! The board has a radical. 3-stage rocker, with a flat center section for fast paddling, and a flipped nose and tail for fast, loose, down-the-line surfing. The trim channels (which are hard to see in the photo but really cool in person) in the nose add lift, and also give great control while noseriding. The template has a wide, stable nose, and a big hip in the tail, which makes rail to rail transition smooth and controlled. The Original is an ideal addition to any Shortboarders quiver, or a high-performance option for the Fish/Longboard crew.

This board works best with a bit of weight stripped out, and the SLX epoxy construcion delivers this perfectly. I have an SLX in my quiver and I love it. SLX sets the performance standard in Epoxy Boards. Boards with the SLX logo are layed up by hand in the traditional wet lay up method using epoxy. It's flat and probably gonna be that way till the end of the week. Not epic conditions yesterday but I got a really fun session in with JJ just south of the all mighty wall... Knee to thigh is where it's at after not surfing for almost a week and a half. I hope this little nor' easter they're predicting materializes for the end of the week. So yesterday was the Legendary Banked Slalom at Mt. Baker in the grand state of Washington. Baker is epic! It really is the raddest mountain in N. America and going there to shred may be the closest thing I have ever had to a religious experience. Temple Cummings pretty much rules Baker and no big surprise that he ruled the event yet again and walked away with ultimate bragging right. Temple ran the course in a minute and forty three seconds and did it all on his trusty GNU Billy Goat with C2 Banana Technology. I have this exact board in a 162cm with epic sea creature graphic in the shop now and it could be yours. I have posted a few pics and I will put some video up as soon as everyone stirs from their hangovers and gets interwierd on the web. Look out!

Waves Tomorrow???

The wind is blowin' and the surf is risin'. Should be some knee to waist high peaks at the wall tomorrow morning, and bigger waves at north facing beaches. The morning wind forecast is calling for a steady NW wind at somewhere around 15+ mph. Might have to look around to find the right spot, but after a week and a half with no surf anything will be fun. Wear your thick rubber because it is going to be cold tomorrow...

Our buddy Mike was in this morning getting a new hoodie. He has been on the injured list for a while now but his surf stoke is still as strong as ever. He recently ordered a new board and should be back in the line up in a few months. He pulled up a classic little video from the original lost movie, 5'5 x 19 1/4, and we all watched and laughed at the ugly looking board Curren shaped. He then proceeded to shred and get shacked off his mug. Here's to you Mike, hope to see you in the water soon!

There was a great turn out at the Surfrider beach clean up this morning. Big shout out to all the folks that braved the cold and made our our beach and community a little bit cleaner. I hope to see a little bit more of a Pioneers presence at the next event so mark your calendar for March 7th and we'll see you in Seabrook Boi!

Our good friends Chance and Richie have spent some time chasing fresh pow this winter. Chance's mom Michelle sent me a few of their home picture/video edits with permission to share with everyone. Las Olas and New Gear!!!

Good morning and greetings! Welcome to an absolutely gorgeous Friday. I went for a nice cruise down by the beach this morning with the pup, watched a great sunrise and some perfect shin high sets peel in. It has been flat for a week now and it looks like we may get a little swell action for Sunday but it's pretty hit or miss at this point. I know about 5 people (sacrifices) who are out of town this week traveling for business or pleasure, you think that we would have waves for sure, right? No chance maybe sometime next week. Well at least we have some memories and some images from last week's swell.

Just incase you forgot here is a little video from our buddy Michael Sanders of Steve O and others getting a few good ones at the rocks. The waves two weeks ago were real good... remember???

In other news, we have a new restaurant in town. Las Olas Taqueria opened its doors this past Wednesday at 356 Lafayette Rd in Hampton, NH. They also have another location in Exeter, that I have been frequenting for the past two years and loving. I am so stoked for a really good mexican spot at the end of my street, after surf burritos are really as good as it gets. Check the Las Olas website HERE and make sure you swing by and check out the food. They use healthy ingredients like locally raised pork and rice and beans made with no lard or MSG. Healthy food fast, get some!

Boxes just showed up! New gear and shoes from DVS, Lakai, and DC. The new Surfer's Journal is in as is the newest issue of Surfing Magazine. Lots of shoe sizes in stock and more on the way spring is right around the corner and our selection of stuff you'll be needing gets better everyday.

I spent yesterday at Mount Sunapee with my family shredding it up. I just wanted to let everyone know what a nice mountain Sunapee is. I hadn't been there for 5 or 6 years and I was blown away by how nice it was. Tons of trails, great snow, fast lifts, and a fun park. It's about an hour and 20 minutes from the shop and is worth the drive. Wednesday is 2 for 1 and is the deal day! I will be heading back up a few times because it was that good!
