The Great Debate gets interesting...

SURFING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure how your session was this AM but mine was as fun as it gets! What a surprise to wake up expecting knee to thigh and finding waist plus sets! YAHOOO!!!!! Light offshore winds, only a few people out, does it get any better??? I saw lots of the Pioneers crew on it early this morning! It's awesome to know that our customers, our crew, our friends, are ON IT! We surf no matter what, we surf slop, we surf storm surf, and sometimes we are rewarded with perfect early morning surf all to ourselves! Take pride pioneers, you're doing it!

The Plot Thickens (cue dramatic music)

If you've been surfing for a while you probably have developed your own opinion about stand up paddle boarding. Well love them or hate them things just got a little more interesting, thanks to the Coast Guard officially classifying SUPs as "vessels", which puts them in the same category as kayaks, surf skis, wave skis. That official classification means that SUPs must now stay 100o feet from the high tide mark in undesignated SUP areas and they must stay 100 feet from all swimmers, which includes surfers. This new rule has been implemented in the Orange Coast district of California but could become the example that many other areas could follow. What this means in reality is basically no SUPping in areas where people are surfing, which in Cali is everywhere...

Stand Up Paddler editor commented on the issue by saying "the tension between the surfing and standup paddling communities, (which seem to share an ironically sizeable overlap) is very real." People are so passionate about surfing, and the resource is finite, so it’s going to create problems inevitably. Especially if the sport grows. I see the problem. I see what people are worried about: inexperienced paddleboarders endangering others. Right now, we’re lucky that there’s a respect out there. Trestles still seems sacred to me. You don’t see guys out there. Where you see problems is where there is an easy access for standup paddling, like Doheny. The biggest sticking point has got to be San Onofre, because there is such a decorated history of surfing there, and you bring in another paddling craft and it’s just dicey. I think the secret to success here is humility" which seems to be an honest and fair statement. Now if you surf around here you may be asking yourself what the big deal is because at most you'll only see a few SUPpers out at a time. But where this ordinance is taking effect the amount of surfers is insane, as is the amount of SUPpers. It really is a safety concern when you get down to the heart of the issue but the fact the SUPpers are also seen as wave hogs by their prone siblings could have something to do with it.

If I had to add my opinion on this issue I would say that I understand and support this rule. Reason being. Even if you're surfing w/ a beginner on a old heavy 11' longbaord you know how to react to most situations. SUPpers tend to sit further outside and it is hard to predict their next move as they head your way while catching a wave. Plus adding 12 ft board with a 12 foot leash makes for a dangerous situation even at a distance. I would almost compare it to bikers and skaters shredding together at the park. When skaters and bikers collide things usually don't end to well for the skater. The same could be said for a heavy 12 foot sup and anyone in its path. We are very lucky in that this SUP vs Surfer issue is very mellow in NH but like all things change is inevitable and with board and paddle packages at $1000 and so many available, things could change pretty fast around here. At the same time this NH and it says Live Free or Die on my license plate which means you can paddle wherever the hell you want. For the full article, titled "The Greatr Debate", click HERE and I think the only thing left to say is Everybody At The Beach!!!

In Skate news the mini at Hampton Skatepark is complete. Full skate-lite layer and ready to rip. I skated it yesterday and it was RAD. I also got a little skate contest for you all. I want you to film your best mini ramp trick on the new mini and post it on the Pioneers facebook page by next Sunday and if your trick is chosen as the best you'll win two tickets to the Dew Tour the following weekend! I also want pictures too. The best picture taken with you skating on the mini and posted to our facebook page will also win two tickets to the Dew tour. Remember style still means something so make it steezy.

Little waves look like they're going to stick around all week so keep the log handy and be ready to glide!

World Cup Fever!!!

It all starts TODAY!!! The 2010 World cup hosted by South Africa!!! I have been waiting four years for the greatest sporting event in the world to happen again. Soccer really is the greatest game in the world and the World Cup bring out passion that you only see once every 4 years. If you know me you know I am not a sports guy. I don't pay to much attention to the NFL, MBL, or the NBA, and I am proud to say I am not a member of Red Socks Nation. Everything about the cup is epic, the game, the fans, the international sportsmanship. People die for their teams, people will kill for their teams! In the cup there are no silver medals, no sharing of the podium, second place really is just the first loser... The next moth is gonna be epic! On game can change it all!!! Get some!!!

Big news from Lost. Mick, Dusty, Dane, and Gilmore have all been added to the Team!!!!

Wicked Pissa Guy!

Waves are awesome right now. I had a great 3 hour session this morning and I got to tell you there is something special about that Lost Motivator!!! Still stoked beyond belief with that board. Matt Biolis is a geneous, you have to get a Lost to know what I am talking about! Ride a Lost it's all you need! And speaking of Lost I just realized they updated their website. Tons of rad stuff to waist time with. They have pictures of the boards from a bunch of different angles now. The Mayhem blog is pretty entertaining also. Have a look HERE.

The surfs looks like it should be really fun tomorrow too! Get on it early and shred like you life depended on it!

StoneYour.TV

Good afternoon. It's wet and I am waiting for the waves to build. Hopefully we'll see some messy waist high peaks by dark and they'll be clean and fun in the morning. Until then Check out the new ESM magazine featuring a cover shot and other work by Hampton's own and local VAN driver Brian Nevins. You can pick up a free copy here or browse the mag in it's entirerty over at ESM's website. I posted a bunch of videos below. Full screen them all and wait for those waves to pick up or the skatepark to open at 3. All the videos are coming from Volcom's StoneYour.TV which is a great way to entertain yourself and waist some time. There is so much great stuff there you have to check it out!

If you missed it the Maloof Money Cup well that's a bummer because it was awesome. Chris Cole took top honors and the $100K and one of our team riders, Manny Santiago took a top ten finish in the AM division. This little video is a hid def slow mow of the pro finals. Enjoy!

Gavin Beschen talks about roots and what surfing means to him! This dude and his brother have become some of my favorite surfers in the past couple years...

Gerry and Herbie talk about growing up in the golden age of Pipe and what it means to them today. It is a three part series and about 30 minutes long, but perfect for a rainy day.

More boards from Almost, Enjoi, Blind today including the new DOUBLE IMPACT. Skateboarding is getting tech! This Enjoi series is the best!

Mind Blowing !!!?

Mikey Moran, two heels way over. photo Nevins

Who got some of those epic little peelers yesterday!!! So much fun right??? Everyone I talked with was glowing with longboard stoke!!! How about the above pic taken by THE VAN of Mikey Moran hanging two HEELS over that nose. DAMN!!! The best longboarder in NH, definitely... The best in New England, I'd put money on it... The Best on the East Coast, maybe not, but he's in the top 10. It looks like Brian and Mikey had a great little session, ESPN Blogger Jon Coen, post a little something about Brian's ninja skills, our fun little waves and THE VAN. Check it out HERE.

With moves like this it boggles my mind that Brian opted for life behind
the lens rather than in front of it...

Surf, Art, and Fresh Gear!!!

Mini San O is what someone called Jenness Beach this morning. I've never been there but unless it came from this person, who travels the globe in search of waves, it would have gone in one ear and out the other. But it didn't, Jenness was that good this morning, as good as San O on a small day! Super good little nose riding wave, perfect for the 10'0 log! The surf this evening should be awesome and the surf tomorrow should be just as fun. Get up early and go surf! It's light out at 5 am now so there's plenty of time to get some!

There is a button on the top of this page labeled Next Blog>>. I am willing to bet that most people don't even know it is there. Well I do and I click it often just to see what's around the next corner. Usually it's crap, yesterday I got sent to a blog about some older ladies camera shy fluffy rabbit! Ultra Crap! But today I got sent to a blog about an artist named Harosi. From there I went to his website and saw some amazing art. Harosi takes broken skateboards and glues them together and then sculpts epic things out of the heavy, colorful blocks of wood. This is by far the coolest art I have ever seen that has been made with recycled skateboard decks. Check the photos and Harosi's website were there are more examples of his work. And don't be scared, click the Next Blog>> button and see where it takes you...

So besides getting awesome waves today, we also got tons of awesome gear. A ton of new Vans bringing are total Vans shoe count to 33 different styles... Who's got a better selection of Vans than that??? No One!!! Get down here and freshin' up your style!

Lots of Chukkas, Lots of Colors

All New Era Pro

New Rowley 99s, 3 different color ways!

Fresh Box of Nixon Gear which included the raddest backpacks, tees, long sleeve tees, and tank tops! It's time, summer is here, Suns Out, Guns Out!

These two are for the Ladies and you need to show Duke some love!

Like I said the raddest stuff around, Right? Now off the net and go get WET!!!

Everybody at the Beach!!!!

HDMI

That's right! HDMI baby. Welcome to the future!!!! I dropped $60 on an HDMI cable yesterday. Steve and I have become webcast junkies over the past year. If it's live and on the net chances are we're glued to it. At points our addiction to the computer screen has almost made us appear anti social, and if you wanted our help during an ASP final well lets just say you probably weren't getting the undivided attention you're used to at Pioneers. Neither of those two things will change but now we'll be broadcasting all the live feeds on the flat screen so you can be addicted and anti social with us! Today is the first day of our live webcasting action as we break the set up in with the Maloof Money Cup held in NYC today starting at 1pm today and tomorrow at 11am. If you can't make it to the shop and you want to be anti social at home click HERE for the live feed. This contest has quickly become the biggest and most legit street contest in skating's history. Buck's down there representing Oakley, don't be surpised if he has a couple drinks and some how ends up on the mic! I wouldn't expect anything less from the guy.

We got a handful of boards in from Global yesterday. Really fun looking 7'6 and 8'0 Walden Mini Magic boards in 3 phase epoxy! The 7'6 looks like a blast! Wide nose with a tight little tale and beveled rails! Enough volume up front to move up and trim through section but the performance tail allows you to step back and make some tight arcing turns. Check out the following little video of Steve Walden talkin' shop about the Mini Magic.

Steve just rolled into the shop, hair wet and a grin from ear to ear. Turns out there are some thigh high peaks out there this morning. I of course blew it, but Steve's claiming it's fun. Looks like there is the possibility for some fun little wave through the week and possible something a little larger towards the end of the week. If you can't wait and need some day dreaming material click here to see what's out there... warning: you may hate yourself for looking at this... but if you're gonna do it anyways you might as well read up on this when you get there you can surf like him.

Team rider Manny Santiago made the Thrasher Hall of Meat this week... It hurts to watch this...

Enjoy the day!!! Go for a skate, go for a surf, come hang out with us and watch the Maloof Money Cup LIVE on the flat screen. We'll be here!!!
