Sight|Sound

Surfing is supposed to be an individual act. It’s supposd to illicit creativity and take place in a natural environment. It’s supposed to have moments familiar and original. It’s supposed to be both elegant and raw. Surfing isn’t supposed to be choreographed. The surfer and board do what they want. Let them be seen as they want to be seen; let them be heard through only their motions. Let them surf in climates warm and cold, on waves big and small, on boards long and short, in countries near and far. Let the camera capture what it can.

Let there be Sight|Sound.

From the surfer-director of Picaresque, is another film without dialogue. Another group of talented individuals doing what they do best, with an eclectic soundtrack mixed-in to enhance the vibe. Lots of local shots of the crew in Maine shaping Grain boards and surfing Longsands. Worth the look for sure!!!

Starring: Chris Del Moro, Justin Quintal, Kassia Meador, Alek Parker, Ryan Burch, Mikey DeTemple, Scotty Stopnik, Jared Mell, Daniel Thompson and Tyler Warren

Orangatang Aluminum Core Race Wheels @ Pioneers in NH

Orangatang is proud to present 70mm 4 President and 75mm In Heat racing/hard carving wheels in a new machined aluminum core version (the standard version will still be available). The added mass yields higher rotational inertia, while the higher stiffness results in increased traction and more even wear patterns.

The 75mm In Heat are priced at $112 and the 70mm 4 President are priced at $108.

Kerrazy Kronicles......

JOSH KERR has had a busy 12 months. In the last 12 months he has travelled the globe filming for his debut profile movie "THE KERRAZY KRONICLES" (not to be confused with Krooked Kronicles, one of the best skate flicks ever) and he also qualified for the WCT. A very busy year indeed and a year some have called a career highlight year for any professional surfer.

The "KERRAZY KRONICLES" movie is on the tip of cutting edge performance, Kerr who is known as one of the best aerial surfers on the planet doesn't disappoint when it come to above the lip, his performance on the rail shows a boy who has become a man and his tube riding skills is second to none. The movie has been filmed from around the globe, from the chaos of Kerr weaving thru the crowd at his beloved Snapper Rocks, above the lip and tight in the pocket Bali attack, back side punts that leave you disheveled at Macaroni's, massive Barbados pits, getting his fair share at Hawaii's infamous Pipeline and plenty more will get you amped to hit the salt and do some Kerrzy's !

So here it is, the full length feature film, Josh Kerr getting after it!!!!

New Longboard Skateboards In At Pioneers in NH

Just got some new longboard goods in!!! The popularity of the sport is growing exponentially and we're doing everything we can to stay on top of it. We're constantly getting shipments in from Loaded, Orangatang, Sector Nine, Arbor, Abec 11, Paris, Bear, Randal and Land Yacht.

We just got this new Land Yacht Switch in and I wanted to post some pictures and take a closer look at it with you. The Switch is Land Yacht's premier freeride specific board and has helped define the emerging ride style of today's longboarder. This board has given riders of all levels the chance to experience the new school freeride movement making stand up slides and drifting easier than ever.

The Switch features a mirrored twin tip shape making 180's and switch riding a real possibility.
Built with a 1.75" dropped platform the Switch deck helps to lower your center of gravity increasing your stability while at speed and while sliding. The dropped hips on the foot platform also allow you to lock your feet onto the board giving you added support when you're really "at full speed".

This board definitely rips! Swing by to check out this longboard and all the other decks, wheels, trucks, and completes we have in stock!

Skateboard Park Update One Week In...

Progress at the park as of this morning

So here we are, one week into the construction of the new concrete bowl at the Hampton skateboard park and four months into the planning and fundraising process. I've been lurking at the construction site daily and I'm stoked on both what is being built and who is building it! I'm also happy to report that every event we've held has been a success and we are moving toward our (Friends of the Hampton Skatepark) $25,000 goal! After the KB's event Saturday night, which was epic, the benefit night at Flatbread, the Basketball Shoot out, and the BRICKS we've raised about $20,000! I'm very impressed and so stoked on all the support!!!!

That leaves us with about $5,000 additional dollars to raise and while we do have an event in the works we're really relying on the "BUY A BRICK" fundraiser to get us to where we need to be. As of 6.13.11 we've sold about 50 bricks and that's AMAZING but I know there are more of you out there who are willing to support the cause and we need it now more than ever. So if you've been thinking about buying a brick or you know someone who has, now is the time, please! HERE is a printable version of the "BUY A BRICK" flyer if you can't make it to the shop to pick one up. Checks can be made payable to Hampton Recreation Department/Bowl and can be sent here to the shop or to the address found on the flyer. Please call with any questions and please share this with anyone you think may want to help.

Tomorrow's photos will include Concrete!!!!! They're pouring some trann

Summer Time Fun on the ...Lost Plank

Sometimes the best blogs are the ones I don't have to write myself. This one comes straight to you from ESPN surf blogger, Jon Coen and it's a well written piece on the ...Lost Plank. Click HERE to view some of Jon's other posts.

"There was a time that you only had one choice of things to ride on a gutless summer day. It was, quite literally -- a plank -- a longboard, a heavy, suntanned, probably something you switched off riding with your friends, or a hand-me-down from your uncle.
Then the fish came back in the mid 90s to save us from the foam-starved direction that pro surfers were taking us in. The modern fish evolved for a decade as well. Then certain surf stars, the same group who bought us 17 3/4" slivers at 2 1/32" thick, admitted to having a fetish for stubbier things with wide points forward. Concaves were tweaked. Rockers were decreased. And by 2010, the best selling surfboard in the world was a glorified fish. Now we're back to planks?

What it is:
It's called the Plank, but not the kind you're thinking of. To be fair, ...Lost's Matt Biolas, as a shaper, is more of a leader than a follower. He's been experimenting with Rockets, Grockets, and Squash-It's forever. The Plank, and the more pronounced "Uber Plank," are part of ...Lost's 'Post Modern Fun' line, designed for the weakest of dribble, so you never have to ride a longboard. According to Biolas, he was inspired by a "Mini Simmons" twin keel retro board. His Plank is a diamond-tail quad with virtually no rocker and an outline fuller than a cruise ship tourist looking for the buffet. We're talking 20-plus inches of width on these things. Check this video of Kolohe Andino, James Woods, and Aaron Cormican putting the Uber Plank to the test at Lower Trestles.

Why it rocks:
Actually, it's not so different from a longboard. Check that outline. You have to imagine a cheater five is very possible. Not that there's anything wrong with a log. Sometimes, it's just the medicine for the summertime blues. But if you live somewhere that the water's only warm for three to six months, you want to take advantage and surf as much as possible. And if there's a board you can fit in your backpack and ride micro-waves, (just a slight stretch) why not?

"I actually borrowed the Uber Plank from Kolohe at Lowers and the first thing I thought was 'no way.' It wasn't until I hopped on it that I realized it was kind of cool. It has flat rocker so definitely not for your quick, snappy beach break, but for Florida summers or small Lowers, it is rad," says longtime team rider, Aaron Cormican, "It carries the speed through the flats with pretty much no effort. I rode it as a quad, which made it very loose and forgiving. Still, I was able to do a shortboard snap even with the fuller nose. Overall, I say it's a good board to have in your quiver."

The last five years, we have seen a revolution in small wave boards. And that, my friends, is great for us butt wiggling, head snapping, everyday surfers. It's nice to know that the foam mowers of the world are tweaking Jordy's rocker for his Indo trip or refining the outline of Mick's Chopes quiver. But the research and development at ...Lost (which, contrary to popular belief, involves something other than a quick huddle around the vaporizer followed by a walk to Lowers) is leading to boards that advance speed and performance on the waves the rest of us surf. Is it a crutch? If you can do turns on a boat wake on your skinny 6'2 squash, then call it whatever you want. The rest of us need these to save our summer sanity.

Where to find it:
For slogging through summer slop, check out Catalyst Surf Shop in Melbourne Beach, FL. Those guys are suspiciously pumped on it. Try Pioneer Board Shop up in North Hampton, New Hampshire, or Surf Skate Supply, right there in San Clemente, CA."

We got really lucky, we got an insane group of people building our park. They've been working with concrete almost as long as they've been skating it! Father's Day Present Ideas from Pioneers in NH

What to get the ol' man, that's the question on everyones mind. Father's day is in two weeks and I've got my top five gift ideas to get the ball rolling. So in no special order here we go...

1. Watches!!!!
If your dad spends anytime near or on the sea I bet he would be SO STOKED with a new Ripcurl or Nixon tidewatch!!! Or maybe he'd prefer something a little more dress casual, no worries we got those too.

2. Sandals!!!
We've got a really solid selection of Reef and Ripcurl flip flops but the one I got in mind is the Reef Fanning. It's the most badass of all for two reasons, one it's as comfortable as slaps get and two is has a bottle opener built into the sole. Your dad will never again be left wandering aimlessly looking for the disappearing opener.

3. Sunglasses!!!
Oakley, Electric, Von Zipper all available in polarized!!! We've got a style of shade for every dad! From the chilled out Electric Knoxville to the Speed ready Oakley Jaw Bone.

4. Trunks!!!
We've got so many good trunks its hard to explain! We just got two new styles in today from Volcom and they are rad. We've got board shorts from O'neill, Ripcurl, Vans, Matix, Reef, and more. Seamless with 4 way stretch is the way to go, swing by and make we'll make sure your dad gets just what he needs!

5. Stand Up Paddle Boards!!!
There are so many good things about S.U.P.s. They'll get your dad outside and they are a great form of exercise. He can tour the coast, explore the marshes and inlets, and cruise freshwater lakes and rivers. They're awesome to fish off and a fun way to see what the coastline has to offer. Boards sizes range from 7'11 to 11'6 and the prices start at $725. Swing by the shop or give us a call for more info.

The Progression of Women

Leave a Message is a true testament of just how much this generation of female surfers have changed their sport. This is a performance surf film, with an emphasis on performance. But beyond the ground breaking aerials and long barrels, it is a message that transcends well beyond the lineup: they enjoy what they do and do it to the fullest. Unintentionally, they wrote a new script for women's surfing. Deliberately, they've left their message. This video is the modern collective of women's surfing and has set the bar high for future videos.

The video is free, it's here, and it's AWESOME!!! It's also available to download so you'll have it FOREVER!!! Check it HERE.

GOOD NEWS

IT'S ON THIS HURRICANE SEASON

Colorado State University forecasters predicted the Atlantic hurricane season that began on Wednesday would be a busy one with 16 tropical storms and nine of those growing into hurricanes. They predicted five of the storms would become 'major' hurricanes of Category 3 or stronger on the Saffir-Simpson intensity scale.

The forecast for the six-month hurricane season was unchanged from the CSU team's April forecast. But that would still be busier than an average season, which brings 11 storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

Sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic-Caribbean basin are warmer than normal and the El Nino oscillation had moved into a near-neutral phase, conditions that contribute to storm development. "We continue to anticipate an above-average probability of United States and Caribbean major hurricane landfall," said William Gray, who pioneered CSU's seasonal forecasts.

The CSU team said there was a 72 percent chance that a major hurricane would hit somewhere on the U.S. coast this year, based on historical averages. They said there was a 47 percent chance that a major hurricane would make landfall along the U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico, where major oil and gas facilities are clustered.

Both those percentages were above the long-term average. "These probabilities are based on the idea that more active seasons tend to have more landfalls, but coastal residents should prepare the same way every year for landfall, regardless of how active or inactive the forecast might be," said lead forecaster Phil Klotzbach.

The United States escaped without being hit by any hurricanes during the busy 2010 season. The CSU outlook is in line with those of other meteorologists who issue seasonal forecasts, all of whom expect an above-average year.

I think it's really important to note how durable these boards are and how WELL they are built! We have them available with Randal, Gullwing, Bear, and Paris Trucks and Abec 11 or Orangatang Wheels! Pretty impressed by this board and I hope if you check this board out you will be too.
